Get Up Get Out, and Step into Shape!Back to Articles

Research has found that most people are moving less than ever before. Because we are less active, obesity has increased to epidemic proportions and there is a constant increase in the incidence of high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.

Health authorities believe that most people should be getting 10,000 steps or more per day to maintain good health. The average woman is only getting about 5,150 steps per day, while the average man gets about 5,650 steps per day.

Adding at least 2,000 steps per day (15 minutes walk) can make a great impact on your blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure and weight. Here are some ways to step into shape and have fun doing it!

• Take two ten minute walks during the day.
• Take the stairs rather than the elevator or the escalator.
• Walk to a colleague’s office rather than sending an e-mail.
• Find a lunch spot that is at least a ten-minute walk each way.
• Get up and move at least once every thirty minutes.
• Get off the bus earlier and walk the extra blocks to work.
• Take five-minutes walking breaks from your computer.
• Walk a few laps around your floor during breaks.
• Start a walking club with your co-workers.
• Walk to a rest room on a different floor.
